Jesus Meets Needs
-
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
The background for our story this morning is found in the Bible reading which is Matthew 9:9-26. It looks at 3 needy people who met Jesus. Each need was quite different. Puppet Dave says he is needy, Matthew was unloved, an outcast and lonely, Dave says he is unloved. In the reading a Jewish official came to Jesus on behalf of someone else – his daughter. Thirdly, the woman had an incurable 12-year illness. Unloved, on behalf of another and Unwell.
Drama: KB & Dave talk about Bigger Barns
KB: Hi everybody, I brought my friend Dave today. Would you welcome him?
Dave Hello
KB: Dave, how are you today
Dave: I’m needy
KB: What do you need then?
Dave: I need a new Lego set.
KB: Dave were you listening to the bible reading?
Dave: Yes, Jesus was meeting needs
KB: Lego is not the sort of needs Jesus meets. Some people need a healing touch, some like Matthew need to follow Jesus, some people don’t have enough food or ££ - Jesus meets those kind of needs
Dave: Well I don’t have enough for or ££
KB: You don’t look too poor to me (gold chain), what food do you need
Dave: Chocolate! Well I have other needs too you know
KB: What like?
Dave: Well, I need to be loved.
KB: Ahh, lets all say ahh for Dave he needs to be loved!
Dave: You shouldn’t make fun. My friends wouldn’t play with me last week, they said they had enough people and I was all alone.
KB: Ahh that is sad Dave, but you can be part of the Christian family here at St Pauls
Dave: I feel better now. What needs have you got KB?
KB: Well, it’s not me, my friend is ill and needs an operation to make him well.
Dave: Wow! That’s a big need. We can pray about that and ask Jesus to make her well.
KB: That’s right Dave God cares about all our needs, He heals the sick, and makes us part of his family. God takes good care of us – we are his children after all. We know a song about that don’t we Dave
Dave: That’s right, shall we sing it altogether
KB: I think they’d like that…
Dave: I cant remember who starts off, is it me or you,
KB: I’ll start, you say Yes Jesus Loves Me and then get on with it.
[after the song…. Dave is feeling tired and wants a sleep]
Dave: Bye, see you next time.
Jesus Loves Me
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak but He is strong.
Chorus
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
